Summer is here!

A ridge of high pressure is building in on the West Coast of Canada. This should allow my Pumpkins and Squash to start growing. I’ll give another update in a week or less. June was the coldest in 30 years! That meant my plants didn’t grow much last month.

Lots going on

I am starting:

I have started

Tomatoes: A sauce tomato, Stupice, a Chocolate cherry tomato.
Three peppers successfully started, but only one is really doing anything.

Broccoli, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Leeks, Onions, Asparagus, and more I’m sure I forgot.

I am going to be working on my 4000 square foot area, and make 3 by 10 foot rows one at a time. Not sure what I will do to identify what I planted in areas that are direct seeded.

In the ground, I have:
Garlic (a hardneck variety), Kohlrabi (can’t wait for this one to really start growing), Kale (Lacinato, Red Russian), Arugula, Beets, Carrots, Lettuce, Peas. I really need to get some Broad beans planted. That’s probably what I will put in the ground first in my 10 foot row.
I will probably post my plan for my 10 foot rows. Even if I haven’t filled the beds, I need to get them ready for summer crops, and for my winter cabbage. In a week or two, I will have a 30 foot trellis I can set up.

I got my new order of seeds a couple days ago. In it, contained:
Ailsa Craig Onions
Lacinato Kale
and a free packet of flowers that attract native Bees and Ladybugs.

Tonight, I sowed a recycled aluminum foil flat of Onions. The packet contains 1,250 seeds, but the flat doesn’t hold all the seeds. I’ll sow them a bit later, maybe in early April. This will help me space out my harvests a bit.

That’s all for now. I’ll post another update soon.

This is my first post on my farm. I had an old website installation before, but I didn’t really do anything with it. It was full of spam. Now, I will be continuously be documenting my successes and failures with growing vegetables at home.

Over the next years, I will update this website with harvests, and updates about my plants.

I will start with listing what I am starting now:
– Peppers
– Asparagus
– Broccoli
– Cauliflower
– Cabbage
– Onions
– Leeks

I have ordered 1200 onion seeds, 480 Kale seeds, Shallots, and Artichoke. I have already started 70 Garlic plants in October. I will give updates about the Garlic as soon as I am getting more Spring like weather.
